Jim Wallhead Opts Against Resigning with Bamma, Now a Free Agent

Fans hoping to see a rematch between Eddie Ellis and Jim Wallhead for the Bamma welterweight title will be left disappointed today with the announcement the Wallhead has opted against renewing the Bamma contract.

Fighting out of Leicester, Team Rough House member Wallhead (24-8) began his professional career in 2005, earned notable wins against former John Philips, Jason Tan, Che Mills, and current UFC fighter Igor Araujo before joining Bamma where he defeated former UFC title challenger Frank Trigg at Bamma 7 in his debut, which he followed up with a knockout demolition of Jackson MMA fighter Joey Villasenor at BAMMA 8.

Wallhead returned on an exclusive UK multi-fight deal at Bamma 12 to defeat former UFC contender Matt Veach, to set up a Welterweight title bout with Eddy Ellis at Bamma 13 in a fight which Wallhead broke Ellis' jaw, only to lose by controversial judges decision with fans and pundits alike feeling Wallhead did enough to earn the decision.

Following his loss to Ellis, Wallhead took on Frenchman Florent Betorangal at Bamma 14 winning by spectacular knockout from a slam to set up the potential rematch with Ellis, however this fight was Wallheads last fight on his contract and he has since decided to part ways with the promotion.

BAMMA's manager, Ashley Bothwell, said:

"We are sorry to see Jim go, as he was well loved at BAMMA as a true BAMMA icon. We wish him all the best in his future."

Bamma officials did not elaborate further on why the promotion and Wallhead were unable to come to terms on a new deal of if the fighter was joining another organisation, however an official press release did seem to suggest with Wallhead no longer with the promotion, Paul Daley who was previous out of title contention due to his close relationship with Wallhead, could be next to fight for the welterweight title.   

Free agent Wallhead who has previous fought for Bellator, will now be hot property on the international market. He leaves Bamma with a 4-1 record.

Earlier today Kingdom MMA caught up with Victor Cui the owner and CEO of ONE FC the biggest MMA promotion in Asia. We were able to discuss a whole range of topics including how he got in to MMA, the possibility of signing Paul Daley, Ben Askren as well as the future plans for ONE FC to name a few.


Ben: First of all, thank you so much for your time. We really appreciate that you have taken the time out of what has to be a busy schedule to answer our questions.
I believe you have a back ground in Taekwondo and have a black belt, at what age did you start martial arts and how did you first get into MMA?
Cui: My parents enrolled me into taekwondo at a very young age. That kick started my career in sports. I have been following mixed martial arts since the beginning. I caught tapes of early bouts in the 1990s and fell in love with what I saw. Mixed martial arts was always on my mind as I continued working in sports management.

Ben: You have a background working with some of the biggest organisations in sport such as the PGA, X Games and the Olympics but what made you decide to go it alone and create your own MMA promotion?
Cui: I saw a great opportunity that simply cannot be missed. Mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in the world. Asia is the birthplace of martial arts with history that dates back thousands of years, so it just makes sense that the best mixed martial arts organisation should come from Asia. You have so many martial arts discipline to draw from such as Washu, Taekwondo, Karate, Muay Thai, Slat etc and now world champions in those disciplines can test themselves against other world champions.

Ben: When you set up ONE FC what made you decide to have your own set of rules instead of the unified rules of MMA?
Cui: One FC wants to take the best practices from the East and the West, and that's what we did with our rule set, our safety precautions and our fighter match ups. That philosophy runs right through the organisation. Both rule sets have a lot to offer and have a strong following from MMA fans.


Ben: Does ONE FC have any plans to expand with events outside of Asia? More specifically a possible UK event?
Cui: The demand of ONE FC all across Asia is at its peak and we will definitely hold a record number of shows in 2014. Our Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines fans were so blown away by our past events and have been clamouring for our return. Fans in North and East Asia will also finally be able to catch a ONE FC show live in person in 2014. The sport is growing so fast in Asia and we want to continue the incredible momentum that we have in Asia. We will never say no though and if we find the right partner and sponsor who wants to bring ONE FC to the UK, we will make sure that the UK fans are blown away by a world-class MMA event!

Ben: Do you have any plans to get a TV deal to show ONE FC events in the UK?
Cui: Along with our unprecedented 10-year broadcast deal with Star Sports in Asia, we will bring ONE FC content to more than a billion potential viewers. We will be on public television in the United Kingdom very soon.

The UK fans are some of the most passionate in the world and their level of knowledge and passion for ONE FC is unrivalled anywhere outside of Asia.

Ben: Would ONE FC have any interest in signing UK welterweight Paul Daley?
Cui: We have an amazing matchmaker in Matt Hume, who is the VP of Operations in ONE FC. He has an incredible team of scouts all across the world looking for talent.  We get hundreds of emails everyday of top fighters all around the world looking to compete for ONE FC. I have absolute faith in Matt (Hume) and his team to sign the best talent in the world, and if Paul Daley makes sense for us then we will reach out to him.

Ben: Speaking of Welterweight fighters, you have recently signed Ben Askren. Were you shocked when it was announced that Bellator had let its welterweight champ leave? and did it surprise you that the UFC wasn't interested?
Cui: It is a testament to ONE FC’s global standing that a Top 10 pound-for-pound mixed martial artist like Ben Askren decides to sign with us. Ben Askren’s impressive wrestling credentials joins the stable of world champions from different martial arts in ONE FC’s roster.

Ben: When can we expect to see Ben make his debut for ONE FC?
Cui: I’m sure fans from all over the world are very excited for his debut. Ben will be making his heavily anticipated ONE FC debut in the first half of 2014.

Ben: Do you have any opponents in line for Ben Askren's first fight?
Cui: Ben Askren is on the shortlist to challenge for the ONE FC Welterweight World Championship, and we are looking to find the best fights for him. Our fans in Asia can't wait to see Askren step into the ONE FC cage for the first time and it will be a landmark moment when it happens.

Ben: A big issue in MMA last year was the use of TRT, what is ONE FC's policy for drug testing?
Cui: We have a strict no-nonsense policy when it comes to any form of performing-enhancing chemicals. We have the pleasure of working with a group of professional athletes who have been following the guidelines we have put in place. One of the most important values to me is integrity and it is something I believe everybody should live by.

Our stance is very clear and we will not tolerate illegal drug use.

Ben: In September last year you announced plans for the ONE ASIA Amateur MMA Series which will hold monthly amateur events all across Asia. In my opinion this is brilliant for the sport and will certainly help to promote amateur fighters in Asia. After all, they are the future of the sport and could become future stars.

Have the details for these events now been finalised and when will the first event take place?

Cui: We are looking to roll out the series in phases in 2014. All the bouts will feature a common rule set to ensure a level playing field for amateurs across Asia regardless of where they are from. We already have the top amateurs lined up to compete in the amateur series as they gain experience with the dream of one day competing in ONE FC. We are committed to growing the sport in all levels and this will help groom Asia’s next MMA superstar.

Ben: In 2012 ONE FC put on 5 events, that number increased to 7 events in 2013, how many events do you want to put on this year?

Cui: We are significantly increasing the number of events we will be doing this year. ONE FC: WAR OF NATIONS on 14 March will be the first event in a stacked calendar year with at least one event every month after that. We will also expand to new markets across Asia. 2014 will be a groundbreaking year for ONE FC!

Ben: Lets take a look in to the future now, what are your longer term goals for ONE FC in the next 3-5 years?

Cui: The exponential growth that ONE FC has experienced in two years has been incredible. The sky is the limit for ONE FC. If we continue on the current trajectory, we have the potential to surpass the success of any mixed martial arts organisation in history.

Ben: Thank you very much again for your time, we really appreciate it.

What we know so far about MMA in 2014: The UFC will stage the most shows they have ever in a calendar year, some notable UFC champions will be out injured in 2014, and Cage Warriors will continue their global expansion.... and thats about it.

We are in for a rough and ready ride in 2014, with some twist and turns along they way. Call them brave, call them bold, or call them just plain stupid, but here is my bold predictions for 2014 in no particular order.

1. The UFC will finally sign Mamed Kalidov in 2014, he will likely headline the promotions visit to Poland 
2. 2 UFC champions will lose their belts in 2014 - Chris Weidman and Anthony Pettis 
3. Nick Diaz will return to MMA in 2014
4. One of the Diaz brothers will fight for a UFC title in 2014 
5. Conor McGregor remains undefeated in the UFC in 2014, books a number 1 contender fight before the end of the year 
6. Mark Hunt and Roy Nelson fight each other putting on a fight of the year candidate 
7. At least 3 of the current Cage Warriors champions fight in the UFC in 2014 
8. Cathal Pendred wins TUF 19 
9. Rosi Sexton will sign with Invicta
10. Brad Pickett fights for the flyweight title in 2014 
11. Joanne Calderwood will KO ever opponent she faces in the TUF 20 house until she face Carla Esparza who out wrestlers her on route to winning the strawweight title

Alexander Yakovlev‏ Not Interested in Paul Daley Rematch, Wants to Join UFC

Alexander Yakovlev made his professional MMA debut in 2004, yet he will have only came to the attention of some UK MMA fans some 9 years later when he took on Paul Daley at Legends 2.

MMA fans in the UK could be forgiven for not too knowing much about the 29 year old Russian, after all, he has never fought outside of his homeland, but those will be the same fans who underestimated Yakovlev going into the fight with Daley.

After a nervy first round, Yakovlev used his background in sambo to take the fight to the ground, and out point Daley on the way to unanimous decision victory.

Daley has since questioned if he would have lost the fight, had the bout with Yakovlev took place in a cage rather than a ring and has expressed an interest in a rematch. Yakovlev has other plans however, and doesn't think the ring had any outcome on the result: 

"I am not interested in a rematch with Daley" said Yakovlev. 

"That evening I was in very good shape and I think that in this state, I would have won it anywhere, even on a football field."

A win over a former top 10 welterweight puts Yakovlev in a great position in the welterweight rankings. At 21-4 the Russian is a finisher with 16 finishes to his name - 8 by TKO & 8 by submission. Yakovlev has shown an array of striking and grappling exhibiting what a truly diverse, well rounded fighter he is. Having only lost once in 5 years and that loss came to fellow Russian and recent UFC signee Rashid Magomedov, Yakovlev is on the road to big things.

2013 has been a hugely successful year for Russian fighters in the UFC, with Khabib Nurmagomedov, Rustam Khabilov, Ali Bagautinov and Omari Akhmedov terrorising their respected weight divisions, not losing a single fight in the process. However, Yakovlev isn't surprised by the performance of his fellow countrymen:

'In Russia [there] have always been good fighters, but not always there were people who could show them to the world'

With a minimum 6 UFC events planed for Europe, the success of Nurmagomedov, Khabilov etc. has made Russian fighters hot property going into 2014, with the worlds biggest promotion signing 7 Russian fighters in recent months, and make no mistake about, Yakovlev wants a piece of the action too:

'All fighters dream of [being] in the UFC and I'm no exception. It's the best organisation in the world and there are gathered the best of the best.' 

'I am truly versatile fighter. My stand up as well as ground game are equally as good. I don't like to talk big, but I can say for sure if I'm selected, I will do my best to become the champion!'

With the rise of Russian fighters in the UFC in 2013, it won't be long before we see Yakovlev also in the worlds biggest promotion and as one of the most exciting prospect on the market, it couldn't come soon enough.... If you didn't know who Alexander Yakovlev was before the Paul Daley fight and you still don't, mark my words, you will do soon.

5 MMA Fighters Who May Be Better Off Kickboxing in 2014

If Overeem loses his upcoming fight against Frank Mir it's safe to say he's done, he's through, he's out.... peace.
3 losses in a row in the UFC is not good for anyone, especially not someone who is ridiculous paid, has lost his fights due to arrogant mistakes, and has recently been popped for juicing.

If Overeem were to get cut I can't see Bellator or WSOF interested in him, and I can't see any other MMA promotion in the world being able to afford to offer him regular fights. This for me if where Glory would step in.

On the rise Glory have some of the best Light-heavyweight and heavyweight fights in the world including Schilt, Saki, and Tyrone Spong. Armed with deals with Spike and BT sports, Glory have put on event after event of quality kickboxing which are threaten to take away some of the UFCs steam in the near future.

Should Overeem lose to Frank Mir, who is no easy fight, I feel the opportunity to sign a known MMA fighter, with legitimate kickboxing credential would be too good for Glory to pass up on.

Paul Daley

Paul Daleys inclusion on this list differs from most of the other fighters in that he may be too good for the level of competition he is fighting in MMA at this point.

A former top 10 welterweight, Paul Daley deserves to be fighting at the highest level. Having fought all over the world, Daley has knocked out some of the best welterweights to ever enter into a cage. However 2013 sees Daley fighting cans like Romario Manoel da Silva, Lukasz Chlewicki, and Patrick Vallee.

Having been cut from the UFCs roster for punching Josh Koscheck after the bell, and having been released from Bellator due to a legal issue outside of the cage, there's aren't many fights available to Daley where his opponent will have enough in his arsine to make the fight semi-competitive. This is where kickboxing comes into play.

Having already agreed to compete in kickboxing as well as MMA in 2014, Daley has an avenue to rise back to his former glory in 2014, establishing himself as a kickboxer worthy of competing for promotions such as Glory, K-1, and Legends, all which can offer Daley a bigger platform than the one he is currently on.

Pat Barry

As exciting as Pat Barry's fight are (while they last), Barry is simply not cut out for the level at which he is competing, and it's starting to feel like it might getting a little bit bad for his health at this point.

Barry is one of the best strikers in the heavyweight division - his kicks are some of the hardest in MMA, but unfortunately for Barry he is not physical enough, nor does he have the ground game to compete with most of the fighters in his weight division.

At 235lb Barry is not a massive heavyweight, and could probably make the cut to 205lb, however I genuinely don't see this making a difference for him. I still see him being man handled at light-heavyweight, possibly even more so than he is at heavyweight.

With a record of 5-7 in the UFC on paper Barry looks like he has what it takes to pick up a few wins here and there, however upon further inspection, you will see all the guys he's beat have since been deemed as not good enough for the UFC either and have all been handed their release papers.

When I say Barry isn't good enough for the level of competition he's facing, I don't just mean the UFC, I mean national MMA in general as I don't envision Barry performing too well in Bellator or WSOF either. Both promotions have several fights that would have no problem beating Barry: Kongo, Lavar Johnson, Arlovski, Mike Russow, and that's just a few off the top of my head.

What's keeping Barry around at this point is his fights are exciting, but getting knocked out is no good for anyone especially when it's 230lb plus guys knocking you out. It also feels that Pat Barry is easier to put away with each outing - example being Barrry's most recent fight against Soa Palelei where it looked as if Barry's chin had deserted him.

With all this being said Pat Barry is a great fighter, just not the well rounded fighter required to compete at the top level in MMA. Having competed to one the the highest levels in Kickboxing while with K1, Barry may find that not only may he have more success fighting under kickboxing rules in 2014, it will be a whole lot safer for him.

Thiago Alves

Alves' inclusion is very similar to Overeems in the fact that he can't afford to lose in 2014. Unfortunately though for Alves by the time he steps in the octagon he will have been out of action for over 2 years.

2-4 in his last 6 fights, Alves will be in desperate need of a win his next outing, or face the likely chop from the UFC.

Fighting for a health purse of $60,000 a fight, Alves does not come cheap, especially when you consider the UFC have been footing his medical bills for the last 2 years.

Should Alves ultimately be cut in 2014 it's hard to see any promotion paying anywhere near this kind of money especially when you consider the only 2 leagues (WSOF and Bellator) on the planet who may be willing to dig deep enough to cough up that kinda change, have divisions chocked up of guys that would beat Alves.The likes of Fitch, Palharis, Lima, Burrell etc. shouldn't have a problem despatching an apprehensive Thiago Alves who is worried about being taken down, and therefore hesitant to strike.

That being said, when he is trading Alves Is a formidable striker capable of finishing just about anyone on Gods green earth with a variety of strikes. He is still a marketable name too thanks to his 2008/09 title run, so much so he actually headlined the last UFC event he fought at before his injury.

With a catalogue of brutal knocks, and a marketable name, signing Alves would be an attractive proposition for almost any kickboxing promotion out there. Should Alves be released from the UFC, he may actually be better off leaving MMA for kickboxing, a sport that may suit Alves' fighting style a little more at this point.

Cris Justino

Justino is an absolute beast. Facts are Justino could carry on fight MMA and beating the worlds best 145lb women in the world as she has done her whole career, but what's the point? Justino insists on fighting at 145lb, a weight category 10lbs heavier than anyone actually cares about.

Being one of the most feared strikers in all MMA - men and women, Justino has made of career of battering high level strikers such as Gina Carano and most recent French Muay Thai champion Jenifier Colomb at all kickboxing event Lion Fights.

If it is genuinely true and Justino can't go down to 135lbs, I really don't see the point in her sticking around fighting 145ers who can't / won't bring their weight down for a shot at the UFC either. Having recently competed in a kickboxing event to great success, maybe Justino should consider hanging up her 4 ounce groves and commit full time to a growing sport which can provide her with a greater level of competition, and the opportunity to fight more often.

Paul Daley Def. Romario Manoel Da Silva – KO (Uppercut) – RD 2 (1:42)  

Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley returned to Bamma with a bang at the LG Arena, knocking out Romario Manoel da Silva in the main at Bamma 14.

Starting off slow, Daley started the first round measuring da Silva with a couple of hard leg kicks which left da Silva’s leg noticeably red, and a sweet jab that was money for most of the round. Da Silva offered little offense in the opening frame baring a pawing overhand right, which Daley could see coming from a mile off.

In the second round both men came out noticeably willing to exchange. Semtex continued to land the jab, cracking the much bigger da Silva straight down the middle, which cause the Brazilian to back toward the cage. Daley pressed forward faking an overhand right causing da Silva to raise his guard, leaving the fighter exposed for a vicious left uppercut that took the Brazilian off his feet, instantly knocking out the previously unfinished fighter.

“I heard my corner say to throw the overhand right. One of them caught him, but I could see he was expecting it, so I faked one. He thought I was going to go with the right again, but then I threw the left,” Daley said. “I knew [the fight was over]. You can tell by the way they fall. He wasn’t getting up from that.”

Mansour Barnaoui Def. Colin Fletcher  - Submission (Rear Naked Choke) - RD 1 (4:00) for The Bamma World Lightweight Title

Mansour ‘Tarzan’ Barnaoui successfully defended his Bamma Lightweight Title in the evening co-main event, submitting Colin ‘Freakshow’ Fletcher via Rear Naked Choke in one of the wildest one round fights on the UK MMA scene all year.

From the opening bell Barnaoui burst out the gate like a bull at a rodeo with a barrage of punches, dropping Fletcher with a sharp left hook. Although Fletcher was able to get right back up he was meet with more onslaught for the 21 year Barnaoui who showed off his Muay Thai skills catching Fletcher with a couple of nice knees for the Thai plum.

Its wasn’t all Barnaoui though at Freakshow managed to break away from the clinch and catch Baraoui with a few crisp shots that sent Frenchman to the floor. Sensing a come from behind victory the former Ultimate Fighter contestant locked in a brabo, which looked tight, however Banaoui did well to defend and wiggled himself out.

Escaping the choke, Baranoui was able to take the back of Fletcher where he managed to trap one of Fletchers arms in a body triangle. With only one hand to defend himself and the champion on his back, there was little Fletcher could do to defend against a Baranoui Rear Naked Choke which saw the Englishman tap out with one minute remaining one the clock.

Jimmy Wallhead  Def.  Florent Betorangal – KO (Slam) – RD 3 (3:21)

Jim Wallhead returned to the cage at Bamma 14 to face French fighter Florent Betorangal hoping a win here would be enough to earn a shot at the Welterweight title, which he lost out on when he fought Eddie Ellis Bamma 13 – a fight that most people felt Wallhead won.

In the opening round both men began trading early, with Betorangal slightly edging it. In a difficult round to score, Wallhead may have been able to steal the round near the bell when he was able to get double under hooks, and take Betorangal down in homage to his Judo days using a O Soto Gari (outer leg sweep).

Batorangal came out strong at the start of the second round, catching Wallhead with a couple of good shots against the cage. Seemingly uninterested in trading with the Betorangal at this point Wallhead was able to get a double leg takedown and spend the remainder of the round chipping away at Batorangal in top control.

Probably need a stoppage at this point Batorangal came out strong for the 3rd round. Wallhead was able to back the Frenchman against the cage before getting double under hooks. Hoisting Batorangal in the air, Judo Jim took Batorangal down with a ferocious slam, which replays showed knocked Batorangal out on impact. Upon getting the takedown, Wallhead stepped in with a couple of good elbows for good measure before Marc Godard stepped in to rescue Betorangal.

Max Nunes Def. Ion Pascu – Unanimous Decision (29, 28)

Max Nunes returned to the cage for the first time since his September loss to Jason Jones for the Bamma Light-heavyweight title. Looking to redeem himself at a new weight class, Nunes took on Ion Pascu in a bout that may have middleweight title implications.

Ion was originally scheduled to meet the current Bamma Middleweight Champion Scott Askham for the title at Bamma 14, however Askham had to pull out due to injury, and was replaced by Nunes.

The opening round began slowly with each man attempting to size up each other range. Baring a couple of jabs there was little action from both men for the opening few minutes. The round closed with Nunes controlling the action against cage, which won him the round.

The fight came alive in the second however, with Pascu landing a thunderous kick to the body, which caused Nunes to back up before collapsing like a beaten man. Pascu did he best to finish the fight from there but was unable to. Little doubt though who won that round leaving it dead even going into the Third.

From the opening bell, it was evident Nunes had no interest in standing with the hard-hitting Pascu, dragging the fight to the ground within the opening minute. Nunes remained in top control for the remainder of the fight to take a judges decision 29-28 on all 3 score cards.

Paul Daley is back in Bamma on Saturday for the first of a 3 fight contract, taking on Blackzilian brawler Romario Manoel Da Silva in his first fight for the promotion since his unanimous decision victory over Jordan Radev.

A feared striker, we talked to Daley about his recent announcement to pursue a duel career in both MMA and Kickboxing, his future aspiration, fighting for the Bamma Welterweight Title, and of course his fight with Da Silva. 

Houten: On the 14th of December you will headline Bamma 14 where you will take on Romario Manoel Da Silva, how excited are you to be getting back in the cage for Bamma?

Daley: Fighting is my job, I love my job. [It's] gonna be a great night at BAMMA 14.

Your opponent Da Silva is nicknamed 'junior killer' is this just bravado or does he live up to his name?

He's an aggressive fighter who works to finish, so yeah he can call himself a killer, ain't gonna help him in this fight though.

Da Silva looks to be a bit of a brawler, have you study many of his fights and what so you think of his striking?

Yes I've watched his fights, he's aggressive, likes to trade, but he also has submission wins on his record.

Da Silva has never been knocked out in his career (he has lost once by corner stoppage however), do you expect him to be difficult to be put away?
I expect to hurt him, I'm gonna win. I've fought a lot of guys who have never been knocked out...till they fight me.

You recently announced you will spend the first part of 2014 competing in kickboxing, how excited are you to be heading back into kickboxing?
Very excited, I'm gonna train hard for the fights, that get progressively harder. I feel the later part of my career will be kickboxing only, unless I get a BIG MMA MONEY offer. 

I want to purse fighting for Glory, K-1 or LEGEND in Russia. Right now I've signed with 3 kickboxing promotions, including a 3 fight deal with FFC.

Is the kickboxing deal a sign that you are looking to move away from mma?

Not move away from MMA, but master my craft a little more, especially as it seem to be grow and getting a lot of attention right now; I will still fight out my BAMMA contract. 

You have always been one of the more active fighters around, between Bamma, the option to fight for other promotions out side of Bamma and now kickboxing, how many times to you plan to fight in 2014?

I will fight 4 times before June/July, and maybe 3 more times after that. 4 kickboxing and 3 MMA, I hope.

You have expressed a real desire to rematch Alexander Yakovlev who you recently lost to, is that the mma fight you want next?

It's would be nice to get a re-match and fight him in the UK, but I doubt this will happen. I want the re-match in a cage. I also wanna fight the KSW champion [Aslambek Saidov], and take that belt for my cabinate.

Does that loss give you more motivation to get back to winning ways on Saturday night?

I am always motivated to win. To finish, the loss is out of my head, I just focus on BAMMA 14 now.

You said on the mma hour last week that you are not that interested in fighting for the Bamma welterweight title out of respect for the work Jim Wallhead has put in; if Bamma came to you and offer you the the title fight next, would you decline it?

Yes, I will not fight for the title until Jimmy has his re-match. If he loses it, which I doubt he will, then I will fight for the belt.

Your gym seems to be growing with spirit dojo having achieve some good results this year, what have you got lined up for the gym in 2014?

2014, we are gonna keep active on the kickboxing and Thaiboxing scene, taking every opportunity to learn and grow. We have one fighter who maybe ready for the international stage at a lower level. Hopefully in the next 18months we will move to a new facility. A bigger one.

Finally Paul is there anyone you would like to thank for helping get you prepared for your up coming fight with Da silva?

All my training partners of old, and all my training partners recently, was an honour to spare a few rounds with James Zikic in the lead up to this fight. All my coaches, Sunni, dave, Toby, Paul and head coach and mentor, Rupert Smillie. Mikes gym, spirit dojo, ultimate gladiators, banned fightwear, hooligans united and all my sponsor, family and friends.

Paul 'Semtex' Daley took to Facebook earlier today to announce he is on the verge of signing with a major European kickboxing promotion:

Close to signing a 3 fight deal with a Major, European KICKBOXING PROMOTION, starting 2014.

Our focus is on BAMMA 14 right now, but 2014 will see Team Semtex/Spirit Dojo, competing in KICKBOXING AND MMA rules fights. 

One of the finest knockout artist in all of MMA, Nottingham's Daley has fought for MMA promotions all over the world including, The UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator, Cage Warriors, and Elite XC earning an impressive 33-13-2 record with 24 of his victories coming by TKO including notable victories over highly decorated kickboxers Martin Kampmann and Duane Ludwig.

Currently signed to a 3 fight UK exclusive deal with Bamma, Paul Daley with take on Romario Manoel Da Silva in the main event at Bamma 14 December 14 at the LG Arena in Birmingham.  

Earlier in the year Daley was rumoured to have been offer a fight on Glory 5 which took place in London, however nothing came to fruition. Daley is now expected to fight for both Bamma and the as yet unnamed promotion in 2014, however it is unknown if Daley, a former King of The Ring European Muay Thai Champion will continue to fight both MMA and kickboxing once his 3 fight deal with Bamma is up, or if he will have a change of career paths and concentrate just on kickboxing.

BAMMA have today announced the fight which will kick off BAMMA 14 and start the preliminary fights at Decembers event. That fight will be a Bantamweight battle between Ben Rees (1-0 MMA) and Ed Arthur (1-0 MMA). BAMMA 14 is headlined by the return of Paul Daley to BAMMA, he is set to battle Romario Manoel Da Silva in the main event at the LG Arena in Birmingham which takes place on 14th December.

19 year old Ben ‘Flubber’ Rees fights out of East Devon with a record of 1-0-0, having won ‘Submission of the Night’ for his professional debut in June. He also has 9 documented fights at Amateur level.  Described by his coach as a “free fighter”, Rees started training in MMA at the age of 15 and trains solely in MMA at Lion’s Den gym, which is renowned for its military membership and approach. Summarised by ex-army coach, Dave Matthews, as “a good, honest, young fighter who is tough as nails but very humble”, Ben Rees will be taking a big step up as he opens the show at BAMMA 14.

Rees said: “I am really honoured to be competing on BAMMA, as it is the top UK promotion and always has exciting match-ups. To be allowed to showcase my skills is like a dream come true. Ed Arthur is a tough worthy opponent he has a great skill-set and I feel this will be my toughest opponent yet. Who knows how the fight will go: Ed is strong, well rounded, older than me….Remind me why I’m taking this fight again? Also my Coach Dave says he’s possibly better looking. Anyway, the fans can expect a great bout from two of the best looking fighters in the division. It will be entertaining and one not to be missed.”

Opponent, 24 year old Ed Arthur presents a professional record of 1-0-0 and remained undefeated through Amateur level. Half of his fights have been finished in the first round. Fighting out of Hemel Martial Arts with Denniston Sutherland and Josh Bangert as training partners, Arthur is said to be strong in all areas of the fight game.

Arthur said: “I will drag my opponent into the deepest darkest waters and he will have nightmares forever after facing me. The opportunity to fight for BAMMA is one I am really looking forward to. The bigger the stage, the better for me.  I can show the world how good Hemel Martial Arts is. I deserve the win because I train harder, push myself further and mentally I am stronger than anyone out there. I know what it is to be a true mixed martial artist, not just a joker with a punch. This is my time to show everyone what I am about.”

Yesterday I caught up with Jimmy Wallhead to discuss his BAMMA World Championship fight against Eddy Ellis which takes place this Saturday at BAMMA 13 in Birmingham and the winner will become the first BAMMA World Welterweight Champion. BAMMA 13 is headlined by Max Nunes vs Jason Jones as they battle it out for the 1st BAMMA Light Heavyweight World Championship and also Curt Warburton fight Mansour Barnaoui for the vacant BAMMA World Lightweight Championship.

Jack: First of all how are you Jimmy?
Wallhead: Really good thank you and looking forward to Saturday.

Jack: Everyone knows about your Judo credentials by now, do you still focus on this in camp or is there anything in particular you have focused on in this camp in preparation for Eddie Ellis?
Wallhead: Not at all,I never really work judo on its own at all anymore but have started implementing certain techniques into my mma game. As for preparing for Eddy I've aimed to cover everything.

Jack: You haven't fought for 6 months now, are you raring to go again?
Wallhead: Absolutely

Jack: In the last 18 months you have only spent 4 rounds inside the cage. Do you expect ring rust to play a part at all? What have you done to counter this possibility?
Wallhead: I've not even considered that to be honest I feel great and I'm constantly working hard in the gym so always feel on my game.

Jack: I read that you were told you were too experienced for TUF when you applied. Is this true and what was the experience like?
Wallhead: That is true, it was a long time ago but I enjoyed the trip to Vegas for interviews etc but that's as far as my ultimate fighter dream went.

Jack: There was lots of speculation on previous UFC visits to these shores that you would be signed. You instead chose to sign with Bellator. What made you make that decision and was there ever any contact from the UFC?
Wallhead: There was never contact from the UFC at that time the Bellator thing came about I took it,maybe wish now I didn't but everything is for a reason that's why I am who I am now.

Jack: Are you still signed to Bellator or are you now only fighting for BAMMA?
Wallhead: Only for Bamma.

Jack: You have faced some real top competition so far in your career. What is your best win to date?
Wallhead: I'm not sure, I would have to say my 3 Bamma victories stand well above the rest.

Jack: What do you know about your opponent Eddy Ellis and how do you think your skill sets compare?
Wallhead: I think he is well rounded and very tough, I think we're very similar in that sense so should lead to an exciting bout come Saturday.

Jack: On Saturday you will be fighting Eddy Ellis with the winner becoming the first bamma world welterweight champion, is this the biggest fight of your career?
Wallhead: Yeah without a doubt this is what I've wanted since joining Bamma so its a huge fight for me.

Jack: A win on Saturday night could put you in a position where BAMMA may want you to defend the title against Paul Daley (your long time friend & Rough House training partner) would you fight Paul if asked by BAMMA?
Wallhead: To be honest that's a ridiculous question its not going to happen lol

Jack: How's the weight at the minute, are you on schedule and where you want to be ahead of the weight cut at the end of the week?
Wallhead: Absolutely great if anything slightly ahead so chilled right now.

Jack: Finally Jimmy, give us a prediction of how you see the fight going on Saturday night and how do you see yourself getting the win?
Wallhead: Me becoming champion in anyway I can possibly do so in a fan pleasing entertaining fight.

This is the second officially announced bout of the event, the first being the fight between the scandalous Russian heavyweight Alexander Emelianenko and the Croatian MMA legend Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.

Alexander Yakovlev (19-4-1) is well known to Russian fans for his M-1 league performance. Yakovlev, who has certificates of mastery in hand-to-hand fighting, freestyle wrestling, sambo, and combat sambo, clinched the win in 16 of his fights, with 8 knockouts and 8 submissions.

Last November, with 5 wins in a run and a tie in hard confrontation with Shamil Zavurod, Yakovlev had a title fight with the M-1 Challenge champion Rashid Magomedov, but lost by the judges' decision. Having drawn the right conclusions from this experience, the Bad Boy came back to the ring last April defeating Murad Abdulaev in a close fight.

His opponent, Paul Daley (33-12-2), British knockout artist has fought in the 10 years of his professional career in almost all major MMA promotions, including Strikeforce, Bellator и UFC. Semtex, famous for his quick temper and lethal left hook, has already knocked out 24 fighters, with MMA stars Duane Ludwig, Martin Kampmann, and Scott Smith among them.

Now Daley is on the rise again: he has to his credit 4 wins in a run and a free hand (Daley has recently parted with Bellator). He had his latest fight in Liverpool, having knocked out Lukasz Chlewicki in the first round.

Russian MMA fans will have to wait until November to find out who is more explosive - the Bad Boy or Semtex.

Former Bellator And UFC veteran Paul Daley signs one-year, three-fight deal with BAMMA. The British welterweight Paul “Semtex” Daley (33-12-2) has signed a one-year, three-fight deal with BAMMA. He announced the news on Tuesday via his Facebook page.
“Yes, I have signed to BAMMA. Exclusive to the UK, still expect to see me fighting around the world with other organizations, such as in November in Russia with LEGEND,” said Daley yesterday.
Daley was released from Bellator MMA on July 25 due to legal troubles stemming from a rumoured bar fight in his native England and visa issues that prevented him from travelling to the U.S. The new deal marks Daley’s return to BAMMA.  The 30-year-old has previously fought twice for the British-based promotion, where he had trouble making weight both times.

“BAMMA’s 12 month/ 3 fight deal is suited to me perfectly right now, and I feel their international match ups appeal to hardcore fans, and the production and PR appeals to mainstream sporting viewers,” he wrote.
Daley is a former Cage Rage welterweight champion and has fought for the Strikeforce welterweight title and was a top contender at 170lbs in the UFC until he hit Josh Koscheck after the bell and was ousted from the UFC.

Daley is expecting to be on the as yet unannounced BAMMA 14 fight card in December.
“Right now my focus is on my next fight in November, but expect me to fight for BAMMA this year at a UK arena show in December…possibly."

Nottingham based Welterweight Paul Daley has this morning released a statement confirming he has been unconditionally released from his Bellator contract as the promotion feel Daley will not be able go obtain a visa to fight in The US following the results of a past legal issue.

Reports  of the release surfaced yesterday evening, with Daley now confirming his release via his official facebook:

"Yes, i have been released by Bellator, due to visa issues resulting from previous offences. Although my application for a new visa WAS NOT DENIED, i am assuming the Bellator legal team thought it would not be possible for me to obtain one, in light of recent events.

I apologies to all the fans/supporters, that wanted me to win the Bellator tournament and challenge the boring Ben Arsken for the title....this is not gonna happen now, but we have Martin Stapleton and Rob Sinclair in Bellator, representing the UK, both im sure will do a great job.

I am currently in talks with a number of organisations, and have about half a dozen contracts already in my inbox........but i will take my time, and read through them all. The whole situation has been difficult, but my release now alllows easier negotiation with different organisations.

I will be fighting real soon, September. Any media want more information, please inbox me directly.

Thank you."

One of the finest MMA fighter to come out of the UK, Paul Daley, who holds notable wins over Scott Smith, Jorge Masvidal, Martin Kampmann, John Alessio, and Duane Ludwig most recent fought at Cage Warriors 57 where he beat Lukasz Chlewicki by doctors stoppage. 

Following the release its likely that Daley will be one of the most desired free agents in MMA.

 Paul Daley (32-12-2) has his wish, after recently posting on his Facebook account that he was becoming frustrated that Bellator wouldn't let him fight. Today it was announced that he has a fight lined up.
Daley's return is set to happen on July 20th in at Cage Warriors 57, where he will fight in the main event against Polish fighter Lukasz Chlewicki. Cage Warriors 57 which takes place at Liverpool's Echo Arena will also feature Ronnie Mann's first fight for Cage Warriors since signing his exclusive contract. Daley last fought for Cage Warriors in July 2008 where he beat Bojan Kosednar via first round KO and will now return almost exactly five years to the day later.

Daley fought three times for the UFC including a first round TKO victory over Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut. After his stint in the UFC Daley ended up in Strikeforce where he challenged Nick Diaz for the Strikeforce welterweight title in April 2011. That fight is one of the best one round MMA fights you will ever see in MMA and our very own @KingdomMMAChris listed it as his favourite fight of all time.

Daley who was born in London but is now based in Nottingham has 23 T/KO victories on his record and has overcome the likes of John Alessio, Duane Ludwig and Martin Kampmann during his 10-year professional career.

“I’m excited to be fighting back in the UK again and back at Cage Warriors, which is Europe’s premier show,” Daley told Cage Warriors. 

“I pretty much started my career here and it’s great to see how the promotion has grown. I’m happy to be part of it and I can’t wait to entertain all my supporters.”

Daley will face a tough test from Chlewicki (10-2), whose only loss in his last 11 bouts came at the hands of UFC star Demian Maia back in December 2005. Since then he has remained unbeaten in nearly eight years however, that may look better than it is as he took a five year break from the sport. The 34 year old judo black belt returned in 2010 and has remained unbeaten since.

Chlewicki told Cage Warriors: “Taking on one of the best guys in the world, this is the kind of fight I’ve been waiting for. This will be a massive challenge for me, especially in front of his fans, but that won’t affect me at all and I’ll be prepared."

“I want to thank Cage Warriors for giving me this opportunity. On July 20 I’ll prove that they made a good choice.”

Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan added:

“I’m looking forward to a fantastic main event in Liverpool on July 20 and I’d like to thank Bellator for their co-operation in allowing Paul Daley to compete for Cage Warriors.”

Just got confirmation that my next fight will 100% be in the UK, and be in July. I will be selling tickets £40 which will include FREE return coach travel from NOTTINGHAM!!!!!!

One of the finest fighters to come out of The UK, Daley (32-12), has fought all over the world including The UFC, Strikeforce, and Bellator, the later being the promotion which he is currently contracted to, however legal issues stemming back to December 2012 means Daley is currently unable to obtain a visa to enter The US, and therefore most seek alternative fights until the issue is resolved.

Daley who was in attendance at Cage Warriors 55 in Dublin this weekend, recently took to Facebook to vent his frustration of not being allowed by Bellator to take another fight in Europe since his knock win over Rodrigo Ribeiro in May:

However it appears Bellator have released Daley to fight, and he will be fighting in the UK in July. More details on opponent to come.

Paul Daley yesterday took to his Facebook to vent his frustration with Bellator. The welterweight is not happy with the promotion for turning down several opponent choices with separate organisations.

Daley is currently awaiting trial for charges he fully denies. These issue means he currently can't obtain a working visa to enter the USA and hence fight in Bellator. Daley has tried to stay busy and fight in the UK and Dubai in the meantime successfully winning two fights by KO this year in smaller shows. The issue appeared to have been solved at this time.

With Daley still being signed to Bellator the promotion still has final say on agreeing to an opponent and the promotion that stages the fight. Daley is angered by this as he believes Bellator have turned down several opponents when he has approached them about it. With him not being able to fight in the USA for the foreseeable future he still needs to fight to earn a living.

On Saturday night Cathal Pendred will attempt to defend his Welterweight belt against Che Mills at The Helix, Dublin Ireland in possibly the biggest fight on the European MMA scene this year.

For weeks I have been debating who's going to win the fight, when I convince myself the striking of Mills will prevail, I can't help but remind myself of Pendreds wrestling skills. Over and over, I have decided then changed my mind again, to the point where you could confuse me for the summer weather in Britain.

So I decided to catch up with some of finest fighters in Britain, from Bamma Champions, to a Cage Warriors Champion, to a couple guys in the UFC and more, to see who they think will win on Saturday.
